Iniciativas COP en el mundo


El Convenio de Estocolmo sobre Contaminantes Orgánicos Persistentes fue adoptado el 22 de mayo de 2001 y entró en vigor el 17 de mayo de 2004. En diciembre de 2012, este acuerdo cuenta con 178 partes, tiene por objetivo: Proteger la salud humana y el medio ambiente frente a los contaminantes orgánicos persistentes mediante la prohibición, restricción de su producción y uso para reducir y de ser posible eliminar sus emisiones y liberaciones al medio ambiente.

Los países signatarios se comprometieron a adoptar una serie de medidas que permitan la prohibición y restricción de estas sustancias químicas, así como elaborar un plan nacional para el cumplimiento de sus obligaciones; promover el intercambio de información sobre el manejo ambientalmente adecuado de estos materiales y que alternativas a los COP existen; incentivar la participación pública y la sensibilización; llevar a cabo actividades de investigación, desarrollo y monitoreo y ofrecer asistencia técnica a otros países.

México en su esfuerzo por reducir los impactos en la salud y el medio ambiente producidos por los COP, actualizó en 2016 su Plan Nacional de Implementación (PNI), el cual enmarca un conjunto estrategias y líneas de acción para dar cumplimiento a los compromisos adquiridos.
